That's tough for eap's case where you don't want to trigger resumption of playback. Plus, as I said in the bug ticket, I think the current alarm settings menus need help. I don't expect it to be as flexible as KidsPlay, but it's also true that I should be able to write a KidsPlay "applet" to run on Radio and allow remapping any button to do complex things.
