For me, brightness is also a factor in this discussion. When the alarm wakes you up, it might be handy for the brightness to increase - regardless of whether the auto-dim is on or not. If the radio is in auto-dim mode, then it really is very dim, large letters barely visible unless you're with a foot or two. This is perfect in the middle of the night, but not so clever when you need to see smaller stuff such as the snooze menu.
