Your are seeing http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14870#c23 scenario #1 (the first half).
You hear the 'fallback' alarm which means your server is not ready yet to send the alarm-signal and play the proper stream. This fallback alarm currently doesn't fade in (and I think this will have low priority given all the other current problems). Note that I find it very dangerous to make the server sleep. If your server doesn't wake up at all only your first alarm will sound, the second won't go off at all.
