I think Rikk's design is meant to be a "Now Playing" screen. It's an elegant solution which eliminates needing to make a choice between seeing the large time and seeing the album art.
Couldn't agree with you more about eliminating the popup menu during the alarm. The alarm function could be described in the manual, just like the volume/mute button is.
