Hhmm - I'm afraid both was on intention. The alarm was meant to be an alarm (that has to be acknowlegded) and that one could use this feature as a scheduler (by setting an invalid timeout value) in the past was more or less an accident/fortune.
Also that you use the headphone out as a line-out might work under certain circumstances, but actually isn't a supported feature of the radio (so also you were just lucky before). As there are no official design specifications the only reference is the feature set in the adverts (where I can read of an alarm function, but not a music scheduling function).
