Well, it does make kind of sense since there is no guarantee that all firmware versions are 100% compatible. It might just as well be that a newer firmware requires a newer server to operate.
There used to be *.version files in the server/Firmware directory which you could edit, indicating whether a particular firmware needed to be upgraded or downgraded.
