They don't. All internet radios I know of connect to some directory
server in order to look up the available stations and their URLs. The
only difference is that they access that server anonymously, without
the need to create an account, so you don't normally notice it. But if
that server goes down I'm sure they will run into problems, too.

The big advantage of the Squeezebox system is that unlike other
internet radios you -can- still run it from a local server, even if
mysqueezebox.com happens to be unreachable.
