I think I solved my problem by editing the server.prefs file manually, I

Feels like there was an incorrect entry in there that caused the server
to behave badly. I've no idea how it got there yet but now I have an
alarm indication again and hopefully also a working alarm tomorrow
morning.
If more people see this, we should report it as a bug.
