Did a bit more digging through the database and it looks like the COVER field in the TRACKS table is only populated for the first track in an album
All the other tracks in that album seem to pick up their cover from the ARTWORK field in the ALBUMS table. This field contains the ID of the track in the TRACKS table which holds the link to the cover.jpg in the COVER field Quite why it works this way I'm not sure, maybe it's quicker to scan that way, but I suspect that this may be the cause of my problem I just added a cover.jpg and did a rescan of changed items (ie not a full rescan) and it seems to have picked up the artwork OK for most - but the way it renumbers changed and new files means that it could quite easily get itself in a twist.
