Are you using mysqueezebox.com when all this happens? That's not a backlight problem. You're looking at two different screensavers. See Settings > Screen > Screensavers > When stopped (and When off). The 'Digital Clock' screensaver, which I believe is the default for stopped, is set on a graduated gray background. The 'Digital Clock (Black)' screensaver is on an all black background.
Why you're seeing the two is another question. Could one be set as the off screensaver and the other when stopped? Problems syncing settings with mysb.com might be another explanation. That seems to be a big problem right now with the Touch, the Radio and mysqueezebox.com. When you turn the Radio on it's probably not connected to mysb.com, so you get whatever the player thinks is the stopped screensaver (on the gray background). When you connect with mysb.com, you get the screensaver according to the setting on the mysb.com servers.
