Well, your problems clearly show why many people think that DRM is a
bad idea (as it limits consumer choice). Digital content is also just
licensed to you (with whatever restrictions the licensing company
prefers). I am not even sure Microsoft would license its DRM to anyone
if asked (I know Apple did not, but eventually choose to abolish DRM
instead for its audio content). Another problem is what Mnyb called a
"business decision of some kind". Afaik the Zune's market share is
paltry when compared with that of iTunes. ;)

That said the SBs support many file formats, so if you zune music is
already free (or you  are able to remove your music's DRM chains) then
it is quite likely that it can be used by the SB system.
