D'oh. Thats what it was. I had upgraded the helper, but didn't realise I had to update the radio applet. I was only running 2.4. Its fine now, looking forward to the first morning where I can actually read the time without a magnifying glass once the alarm has fired. Shame this is a third party solution rather than the default.
