You do not have to be registered on the site to send email to a mailing list. However, if you are not subscribed to the list to which you send mail, your mail might be held for approval by a moderator or it might be rejected if the list does not accept email from non-subscribers.
To subscribe to a mailing list, send an empty email to listname dash subscribe at opensolaris dot org in which listname is is replaced with the actual name of the list to which you want to subscribe. Or you can use the <os.org mailman site> to subscribe using the mailman interface.
