To make it useful, you either need a SBS on a computer or a connection
to mysqueezebox.com. Theoretically, I think it can stream without a
server, the problem is just that you won't be able to change what's
playing with the current firmware without a server.

If you don't want to rely on mysqueezebox.com and don't want a computer
powered on, I suggest that you either get a Sheevaplug (and install
Squeezeplug software) or get a Vortexbox Appliance, both these
solutions are quiet and have low power consumption. 

Another alternative, if you are mostly going to use internet radio, is
that you get a Squeezebox Touch to use as a server. However, a Touch
won't let you use server side third party plugins only third party
applets.
