Wow...I can't believe I figured this out...this is a BUG!!!! (at least I consider it a bug.)
Apparently, the SYSTEM file attribute was the cause. Once I changed the attribute (attrib -s *), the files showed up in the list Why ignore files marked with the system attribute? Since I copied these files off a linux server (my NAS server.) Perhaps this is how the system attribute got set.
