The BBC Radio app supports both WMA and FlashACC versions of the streams. The FlashAAC ones sound slightly better and are the ones used by the iPlayer web interface. The WMA ones are primarily for internet radio devices. One advantage the applet has is that it checks for the stream to use at the time you press play and hence if the BBC make any changes it will use the latest stream. That said it can't prevent problems at the BBC or their content hosting provider end - what it can do though is offer you two sets of streams to try.
