Nothing shows on the screen as you noted except the moving dot. However if you push the fast forward button once, a timeline will pop up in a box showing how far you are into the track or podcast.
It will not actually fast forward unless you push the FF button again while the timeline box is on the screen, so if you want to know where you are in the piece, just push the FF button once.
