This is most likely the cause. Between the small, low-cost screen, and
the chosen method of backlighting it, these are likely the causes of
any "halos" being seen. This isn't your 50" LED-backlit LCD panel TV
that you should be expecting "absolute black" from... it's not going to
happen on most smaller, lower-cost LCD panels.
