This problem has been really frustrating, and I've seen a number of
threads asking for solutions to this problem and they all seemed to end
with no solution. I found something that seems to be a solution for my
particular case, so maybe this can help someone.
ENVIRONMENT
- Logitech Media Server 7.7.2 running on Windows 7 Home Premium
- 2 x Squeezebox Touch
- 2 x Squeezebox 3
- 1 x Squeezebox Boom
- 1 x Squeezebox Radio
- D-Link DIR-825 Rev A router (also tried Asus RT-N66U)
- all but one of the Touch are connected by wireless
SYMPTOMS
Seemingly at random, the Radio would drop off the wireless network and
I'd get the red WiFi symbol. Rebooting the radio wouldn't help it
reconnect. Sometimes it would automatically reconnect hours later. A
router reboot sometimes fixed it. Usually it would go for 15-20 minutes
before dropping off, and occasionally an hour or two, but there was no
obvious pattern.
I tried a different router (Asus RT-N66U) with no improvement.
All Squeezeboxes other than the Radio worked fine and could play all day
without any problems.
I got the Radio quite recently, so it had been happening since day 1.
FINDINGS
I was looking at the router logs and noticed that the system running LMS
was requesting an IP very often via DHCP. Although I'm using Windows 7
Home Premium, I use it as a server, so it doesn't get rebooted very
often.
When I went looking in the Windows event logs on the machine running
LMS, I noticed that the 'srv' provider (LanmanServer) was throwing
errors in a frequent but random pattern, as below:
Code:
--------------------

to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the

--------------------
This is a truncated log. I had more than 2000 such errors going back to
June 2012.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Not sure if this will solve it permanently yet, but I have rebooted the
server after making the change described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177078
That KB article doesn't mention the same event ID specifically, but
there are other things to try if that doesn't work. I haven't seen the
error given above since then, and the router has stopped registering
frequent DHCP requests.
Also, I left the Radio playing continuously for 16 hours as a test. This
would never have been possible before, and was tested both while plugged
in and on battery.
As for why it only affects the Radio and not other Squeezebox models, I
guess they are more resilient to this problem.
