LMS Version is 7.7.5, and my external drive is connected to a Windows 10
USB2 or 3? It could be a performance problem: if the server takes too long to read all the content from the disk, the Radio might just give waiting for the data to arrive. Did you check your LMS' server.log file (Settings/Information)? Maybe there are some hints in there?
Browse Music Folder (BMF as it's often referred to) got some performance improvements in 7.9, in particular if you set the memory configuration to "high" or "max" (Settings/Advanced/Performance).
