This needs some sort of rebasing because the third commit seems to remove stuff
that was added by the first commit...
I don't know if it just needs to be one commit or if there's some sensible way
to structure it into multiple commits but right now it's a nightmare to review
because you spend time reviewing things that then get taken away again.
