The private overpass instance we use is protected by a TOTP token whose key is 
shared with the main site and so far that seems to have been successful.

Nominatim is a different issue but in that case the nominatim queries are 
already done server side (for search) and the HTML rendered there - the 
nominatim queries for routing are done from the client though.

That's not to say we shouldn't switch to server side rendering for other 
reasons.
