This request comes up every now and then in several contexts. I wonder if
editors would be able to mitigate this issue to some extent by implementing
JOSM-style sparse downloading: openstreetmap/iD#8574. This would require
something like the Overpass API to return intersecting ways as well. For
read-only use cases, a derivative service like Spyglass would facilitate more
comprehensive spatial querying without necessarily requiring this project to
adopt a spatial database (#6570).
