The original request was for the user to have some transparency and control
over who befriends them. However, we aren’t ready to introduce full-fledged
social networking functionality to the site. To keep the site’s social features
lightweight and distance it from any expectation of a mutual relationship,
#5261 instead renamed the feature from “friending” to “following”.

Even ”follow” is kind of overstating things unless you watch your follow feed
like a hawk. The term can lead to some unfortunate connotations. A user
recently [thought the site was alerting them that someone is stalking
them](https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/i-am-being-followed/141784). It’s
understandable, since we deal with location data, unlike with GitHub and their
user following feature.

Would we be open to renaming this feature again to avoid misunderstanding?
Something like “pinned users” or “starred users” perhaps? Or should we leave it
as is, seemingly in anticipation of actual social networking functionality
(i.e., Microcosms)?
