pnorman created an issue (openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website#7094)
We're up to 8 featured layers on the site and these are inconsistently titled
in the Map Layers panel. We have some labeled by:
1. their function within the site ("Standard");
2. type of information they're designed to show ("Cycle Map", "Transport Map",
"Humanitarian");
3. name of the style ("CyclOSM", "Tracestrack Topo") which in the case of
Tracestrack also contains the type of information;
4. technical component within the style stack ("Shortbread"); and
5. company providing the style ("MapTiler OMT").
Different users have different needs when picking a layer, but this mix is
confusing to all. @gravitystorm has also spoken on the confusion this can
cause. I do not have a good idea for how we *should* title the layers, so I
wanted to open it up to discussion and ideas.
A couple points that came to mind when writing this are
1. some layers may not have a style with a useful name (e.g. the style behind
MapTiler OMT);
2. two layers may serve the same purpose as the unique criteria of the [new
tile layers
policy](https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/new-tile-layers/)
considers technical novelty alongside style novelty
