@pnorman, you're right, we do not auto-convert private or public to trackable, 
silence on a banner or email isn't permission, and turning private into 
trackable would expose the timestamps and ordering the user chose to hide.

Keeping the old traces exactly as they are today is a good option. We don't 
delete them and we don't change their visibility. New features (GPS tiles, new 
endpoints) just ignore them.

For users who do want their old traces in the new features (gps-tiler, API, 
etc), changing them one by one isn't realistic when you have many traces. So we 
could add a button to move all of them to trackable or identifiable in a few 
clicks, maybe with some filters. This could run a rake job that converts the 
traces of every user who opted in.


In short, nothing gets deleted or changed automatically. New uploads only 
accept trackable and identifiable. Users can convert their own traces to 
trackable or identifiable whenever they want.
