You're right that an app that's doesn't need to run 24 hours a day can be cheaper on ec2. The prices are comparable for 24x7 though. Slicehost charge $130 for a 2GB slice. Amazon ec2 charge $72 for a 1.7GB slice but you pay for bandwidth separately. So in many cases, the monthly cost will work out about the same. The products are *very* different though.
