In 1987, the Open Software Foundation selected the HP widget set for the basis of its Motif user interface environment, partly because of the pretty 2D effects it had. I was involved in user interface tools throughout the 90's, and an interface design training course my company delivered regularly had an injunction against "gratuitous dimensionality". I thought you'd like the term, now we've come around to 3D.
