Hi folks, I didn't run into any other Australians at Rubyconf in November (Dr Nic doesn't count, he defected) so now that most of the videos are available I thought I'd share my highlights.
In no particular order, here are six talks I saw and enjoyed or missed and regretted when I heard the buzz: http://confreaks.net/videos/376-rubyconf2010-anthropology-of-ruby-excavating-its-gems I'm a sucker for an interesting graph, and Jeremy's work on mining the set of historical rubygems for interesting data was eye opening. http://confreaks.net/videos/371-rubyconf2010-debugging-ruby Aman's talk was dense, but a nice overview of some tools useful for debugging MRI and REE apps. Skims a lot of topics with links to more info. http://confreaks.net/videos/427-rubyconf2010-zomg-why-is-this-code-so-slow Aaron Patterson managed to hit it out of the park with a talk that was technically engaging and hilarious. Plenty of people considered it their favourite talk of the conference. http://confreaks.net/videos/435-rubyconf2010-the-enterprising-rubyist-bootstrapping-your-business-with-ruby I missed this one, but for enterprising types it was popular. http://confreaks.net/videos/431-rubyconf2010-keynote-why-ruby DHHs keynote wasn't particularly noteworthy in ways you might expect - I walked out wondering if I was at a drug legalisation conference instead of a rubyconf. odd. http://confreaks.net/videos/468-rubyconf2010-unblocked James is well known for reading others code to learn new idioms. In this talk he shared some uncommon (and unwise) yet interesting ways to use blocks. For bonus points he made me laugh and has an cute tendency to relate everything to his newborn baby.
