Yes I am connecting through telecom and some of the problems were related to that. For example when I was installing rvm and it was pulling in tar files they often came in truncated. Somewhere down the line something similar must have happened to other gems or system libs I gather. Anyway it's been raining cats and dogs here so I thought It would be a good day to finally get around to upgrading ubuntu so wiped rvm, re-installed ubuntu, re-installed rvm and am on my way. Whew. I think I must be close to my cap by now.
