I could talk about the backend for a real-world GPS game called Gotcha. We've run competitions in Australia and South Africa. The South African game has over 40,000 players and during peak times sees 1.5K players hitting the server every few seconds. It runs Rails 3.2 on Heroku with Postgres, Memcache and a few other thingies. There's some fun things we've needed to do with optimisation and automatic cheat detection.
