Hi Amanda They are indeed different - perhaps we should get this group on meetup.com too, but it's been going strong here for several years now. Beyond staying subscribed to this list (there's always an email or two in the lead-up to each meet), the best source of information is ruby.org.au: http://ruby.org.au/meetups/mel.html
There's no sign up process - people just rock up. There are also hack events on the second Tuesday of each month, which are an opportunity for Rubyists and Ruby-curious to gather and work on their own projects, or together with each other, and if you get stuck you've got plenty of peers to ask questions.
