Hi Guys, Ninefold is sunsetting their Rails platform by the end of May and I've got a basic side project that I need to migrate and wanted to see what other people were doing. My skill level is next to zero for *nix based admin but have a decent amount of Windows admin experience.
My project is pretty vanilla but the ability to have a custom domain with https, and a bit of memory/processing grunt is crucial for the site. I also have sidekiq for queue's. I'm paying $45-ish/mo for 1 x 1ghz DB server and 1 x 1.5ghz web/redis server, nothing too fancy or redundant at this point. I do like the fact I can And whilst it's minimal, yes, I don't want to pay a $20/mo increase in hosting - I don't cover costs with this app yet, so it's an issue. So far I've come to the following conclusions based on the hosts Ninefold recommends; * Heroku: 2 basic 512mb dynos, + non hobby postgres + ssl end point is $US 62/mo. Pro's - very easy, minimal config reqd, can git push. Outages are rare and someone else's problem. Con's - Price per performance is relatively high. Originally moved to Ninefold from Heroku as some of my processing tasks were taking too long to process. * AWS: Assuming I can figure out Elastic Beanstalk, I think I'd need a db.t2.small and a t2.small which works out around $40, or less if I drop the db back to a micro. Pro - big co, supposedly easy once you know how? Con - Fully responsible for the installs/settings though I'm assuming EB ensures firewalls are closed by default? * Digital Ocean; not actually recommended by Ninefold but thought they'd be a contender also. Probably $US 30/mo; 1 x 1GB, 1 x 2GB server. Same pro's and con's as AWS: learning *nix and making sure it's secure out of the box * EngineYard - apparently epic service. 2 x t2.micro is $US 72/mo. * Shelly Cloud - discounted out of decision as seem to be slightly higher pricing and Euro based. * Cloud 66; couldn't figure out if these guys were providers or something like EB which sits over the top of bare metal from any cloud provider.
