theconversation.com is an independent, non-profit source of research-based news and analysis. Our articles are written by academics in collaboration with our editorial teams using the TC platform - a custom rails 4 CMS backed on postgres, with some streaming bits in node.
There's 5 of us on the dev team, working with about 50 editors and thousands of academics. We're looking for an early career developer to join us and help delight our users. We have a healthy wishlist of features, so we can tailor the role to focus on front end, server side or devops as appropriate. A university degree and professional development experience are not essential, however applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability for self-directed learning, particularly of web technologies. Participation in code schools, rails girls, rails camps, hack nights, open source contributions or cool side projects would all be encouraging signs. Some of the following would also be advantageous: * Experience with rails, ruby, HTML, javascript, CSS or linux system administration * A relevant tertiary degree ( or approaching graduation ) * An active interest in news and current affairs * Fluent in a language other than English ( particularly French or Spanish ) We offer: * A collaborative environment, with opportunities for mentoring and feedback * Multiple deploys per day * A github pull-request workflow with code review, discussion and buildkite keeping us honest * Adhoc pairing as required * 6 weeks annual leave - 2 of them over the Christmas break Starting salary is $50K - $60K plus super, depending on experience.
