theconversation.com is an independent, non-profit source of research-based
news and analysis. Our articles are written by academics in collaboration
with our editorial teams using the TC platform - a custom rails 4 CMS
backed on postgres, with some streaming bits in node.

There's 5 of us on the dev team, working with about 50 editors and
thousands of academics. We're looking for an early career developer to join
us and help delight our users. We have a healthy wishlist of features, so
we can tailor the role to focus on front end, server side or devops as
appropriate.

A university degree and professional development experience are not
essential, however applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability for
self-directed learning, particularly of web technologies. Participation in
code schools, rails girls, rails camps, hack nights, open source
contributions or cool side projects would all be encouraging signs.

Some of the following would also be advantageous:

* Experience with rails, ruby, HTML, javascript, CSS or linux system
administration
* A relevant tertiary degree ( or approaching graduation )
* An active interest in news and current affairs
* Fluent in a language other than English ( particularly French or Spanish )

We offer:

* A collaborative environment, with opportunities for mentoring and feedback
* Multiple deploys per day
* A github pull-request workflow with code review, discussion and buildkite
keeping us honest
* Adhoc pairing as required
* 6 weeks annual leave - 2 of them over the Christmas break

Starting salary is $50K - $60K plus super, depending on experience. To
facilitate mentoring, the role is on-site at our Carlton (Melbourne) office.

If you are interested or have any questions please email me off list and
let me know a bit about yourself by 5pm on Friday October 30th. If you
would like to share any further details such as your CV or public github
account please feel free to include this in the email.
