Thanks for the help.  That testing mouse simulation stuff seems pretty
useful, does anyone know if they plan on putting it into scriptaculous?

Good point. I didn't think about observers and other effects of event 
dispatching. In that case another thing to take a look at would be the 
unit testing library in script.aculo.us. It has some experimental 
functionality for simulating mouse events and key events:
