Dear Rangers,
Here is another new devotion that I wrote last week. I had to wait until I had
permission
from Paul Stookey before I could post it. Enjoy

The Story of Darlene and Buck.
                                   by Adrian Bonham.

This story is inspired by the song Remember/Pokey. by Noel Paul Stookey and
Bob Milstein. I would like to thank Noel for his kind permission to use his song for
this story.

In my story about The Clown I mentioned Darlene the trapeze artist and Buck
the Bronco Buster. This is their story.

Darlene had grown up in the circus, like most of us. At an early age we could see
that she bound to be a trapeze artist. Her grace and prose was something to
behold. As she grew up she developed into a beautiful woman. Darlene became
very good on the high swings, she mowed as though she had wings. Yet Darlene
seemed so sad when she was not preforming. We knew that her father had left
when she was young. No one knew why she was so sad.

When Darlene was a teenager she had many a boyfriend. Some even assumed she
had loose morals. Nobody knew for sure. Now, as a young lady, became very
popular with the men folk. Then she met the Clown and the change was so
dramatic. Longer was she sad or depressed, but always cheerful and happy most
of the time.

About three years ago the circus owner hired Buck, a Bronco Buster from Texas.
Now Buck was a real ladies man and had a roving eye, always on the lookout for
some woman he could charm. Darlene fell in love with Buck, but he did not notice
at first. She decided to become the Rodeo Queen so she could be near Buck.
Now Darlene did not know that there was someone else who loved her. It was the
Rodeo clown, Pokey. Every night he would follow Darlene to her home just to
make sure she was safe. Now Pokey was a shy man, so when it came to talking to
Darlene he could only stare. Often he would she her cry and wanted wipe the tears
away and make her happy again. He knew that she was in love with Buck. No
other man interested Darlene expect for Buck.

One day, during a Brahma ride, Buck was thrown heavily to the ground. As he lay
there, injured, the bull turned to make another run at Buck. Pokey stepped in
between the bull and Buck. By the time we got Pokey, it was to late, he was dead.
Some said Pokey had lost his touch, but those of us who knew him, knew that he
gave up his life for Buck. I told Darlene for Pokeys love for her later that night.
She said she never realised why he was always kind to her. We buried Pokey a
few days later. Buck said, It was the bravest thing anyone could have done. He
could have let the bull kill me, but he chose to give up his life for me.

Darlene and Buck were soon married. When the show left town, Darlene and
Buck did not leave with them. They settled down to raise a family. About 12
months later, they had a son and they called him Pokey.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John
15:13.
