When we hike as a patrol we go.. *Ready for anything we may encounter.

The 10 things you may call "essentials" may not be truely needed,
but they may become.. invaluable as the adventure unfolds..

In a Ranger's daypack, here in the Pacific Northwest you might
find things that you might not need in Texas or the south. A few
are:

1.Rain gear/poncho

2.Dry clothes/spare socks

3.Water bottle (wide mouth)

4.Trail food/energy bars that are food, not a snack.

5.Fire starter that can get wet.

6.Sun protection

7.First aid kit

8.Multi-tool

9.Flashlight (headlight type works best)

10. Map and compass

*I know.. you knew all that, but what you didn't know was
that this message was not about hikeing with boys, but about
the 10 essentials of Royal Rangers! *in my opinion...<G>

When you are a leader of Royal Rangers expect "anything"
and don't be surprised when you *get what you expect<G> Here's
a few things that might surprise you however..

1.Not everyone in your Outpost wants to "be" a Royal Ranger

Parents and Church "want" something to happen, but what that"is"
only becomes an issue when a problem comes up. Some boys get
dropped off, and regret it. A proper Outpost confronts a boy
with a challange he must face.

This is why sometimes the boys act shy or work to disrupt.

The answer is to turn them to each other, and discover a friend.
Friendship is *Ranger spirit at work<G> *Use the "resources" and
have the boys meet each other and work things out.

2.Not everyone wants you as a Leader to succeed.

There's lots of opportunity to step on toes when running a strong
Ranger Outpost. The more successful it becomes, the more it draws
critics, tweekers and do gooder's.. not everyone who comes through
the door is welcome, when packing a hidden agenda.

Leadership, Character, and Virture found in the Ranger ethic sometimes
get's side tracked by politics.

3.In spite of training, People do what people do..

You can air out both lungs explaining what the program is..
but in the end you have to take what you get. Our job isn't
to "Command respect" but to gather/earn it from trust.

So when things don't go your perfect way, don't run over them
with a Royal Ranger dump truck<G>

4.There's a time to zig.. and a time to zag..

Think outside the box.
That's what Jesus did<G>

The Preacher can walk the straight line, Ranger leaders
have to zig zag to a goal<G>

5.Nothing beats success!

Hands down, there's nothing like the gleem in the eye
of a boy who's haveing fun at a *planned event.

If "success" is the result of planning.. what do you
think the job of Leaders is?

Right.. *Planning!

6.When lost, work to raise the Morale!

Disarm critics or complainers with charm and humor<G>
say to the parent with a red face.. "It's not like you
to be so angry<G> What can I do to make it better for you?"

They'll probly tell you that their son don't want to be in
the slacker patrol.. and then you reply: "Oh.. but that's
about your son.. and Sr.Guide is boss<G> *What can I do to
make things better for YOU?"

If this don't work... and the upset Dad is a big shot..
*Put yur FCF Coon hat on backwards and smile<G>

7.Ask the boys what they can do for the Outpost.

Never overlook the possibility that the boys are getting
something right, so go ahead and give them the Honor you
"deserve"<G> If "we" work for the boys.. we "work" for
good things to happen in the future world, perhaps far past
our life..

Go ahead and give them your world..
It's their Outpost.

8.How long can you stand alone?

My limit is 10 minutes.

It's likely that I can tell the best parts of my entire
life story in 10 min. and then I'll start to slow to silence.

*Save your breath... It isn't about yur life story.

9.Discover your place

God made you for a reason.
You have a talent, find it and use it.

10.Work for Christ.

Relinquish control to the "Master Ranger"
