What Is Self-control, And How Can I Get It?
by Eastman Curtis

According to Galatians 5:22, self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. But just because the Holy Spirit lives in us doesn't mean that we automatically have self-control. No, it's something that has to be developed on the inside of us.

This is how it works. First, the Holy Spirit prompts us to use self-control in a given situation. Then it is up to us to follow through and exercise it. Every time we choose to exercise self-control, that fruit of the Spirit grows stronger in our lives.

Self-control is a helpful quality to develop because it can benefit us in every part of our lives. As we practice self-control, we will begin to see the fruit of our efforts in every area of life.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law" (Gal. 5:22-23, NIV).

Are you letting your flesh rule you, or is the Holy Spirit in control of your life? Do you struggle with sexual indulgence, overeating or oversleeping? Make the decision to develop self-control. You can rule your body. Don't let it rule you.
