Be Filled
by Cheri J. Ekbom

"Be filled with the Holy Spirit."
- Ephesians 5:18

The other day I was having a little talk with my son, Nathan. Does your dad or mom ever take you in your room to have a little talk? (Just remember that all the little "talks" they give you are because they love you so much and they want to help you to make good choices.)

I want to share with you about my conversation with my son. We were talking about the word "capacity." Have you heard that word before? It's kind of a hard word. Let me explain.

Let me show you what capacity means. I took a big measuring bowl from my kitchen shelf to show Nathan what capacity meant. I measured two cups of water into the bowl. It was a big bowl. The bowl could have easily held 10 more cups of water.

Actually, with only two cups of water in the bowl, it looked kind of empty. The water was not even close to filling the bowl. There was plenty of room for more water.

Another way to say it would be, "the bowl was not filled to its capacity."

"Capacity" means the ability to contain or to hold. The bowl that I showed Nathan could hold 10 cups, but it only had 2 cups of water in it. Was it full? No. It was only barely filled. The bowl was able to hold much more water.

You are like this bowl, dear one. With Jesus on the inside of you, your capacity could reach up to 1,000,000,000 cups! Are you filled all the way to the top?

"What am I supposed to be filled with?" There are many things that the Bible says you can be filled with. God's love. God's forgiveness. God's healing power. You can also be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues.

You will always be filled with something - good or bad. If you are not spending time reading the Bible and praying everyday, then you might be filled up with the things of the world. This would include time spent with friends, watching TV, playing video games, and doing sports.

These things aren't bad in themselves, but they can be bad if they are all that you think about and do everyday. Don't spend all your thoughts and actions on things, but on God.

How do you get filled with the good things that God has to offer you? In Ephesians 5:19 the Bible says that we can be filled by talking with each other about the Lord. We can sing songs to Him and we can thank God for everything.

You can also put Him first in your day by praying and reading your Bible. Begin to pray in your heavenly language.

Don't be almost empty like the bowl with water in it. Instead, be at your full capacity. Allow God fill to fill you up so you are FULL and running over!
