This DJ reminds me of a young man I once knew... He had earned the GMA, district ranger of the year, FCF buckskin, Bourgeious Trapper brigade, etc. etc... Showed up at church one Sunday with hickies on his neck. Pastor says "that's it- shape up or ship out!" He shipped out. In and out of church, in and out of drugs, in and out of trouble. Do right for a while, then blow it. This goes on for two or three years, then he's doing good for quite a stretch, feels he's called to the ministry full-time, church he attends agrees, and decides to send him to bible school and pay his way. Only one catch. Six months earlier, he had cut a deal with the DA. Drop charges in exchange for enlistment in the USMC. So one fine tuesday morning, GMA number 708 gets out of bed, and decides that today, he will NOT fly to San Diego to begin boot camp, but will go to Bible College. Grandfather with whom he lives is devastated, but accepts his grandson's decision. Two weeks later, with grandpa in the hospital dying of cancer, this boys decides to have one last fling with his buddies before leaving for Bible college and "traveling that straight and narrow road." Two days later, in a drunken and drug induced stupor, he takes his grandparents car for a drive through the local Piggly Wiggly grocery market. Ten years and 18 trips to jail later, with two two-year prison sentences and a thousand dollar a week cocaine habit, this old boy finally decides he is not satisfied with the quality of life he has been leading, and wants to make a change, so he does. That was eleven years ago today, Jan 9, 1991. Today DJ goes to Juvenile Court for a hearing,
and he's going to be charged as a juvenile since next
wed. is his 18th birthday.. Tonight.. *IF HE SHOWS
will be a very somber Eagle board of review.. (BTW
held at the very same juvenile justice center that
he is at this morning)
*Cdr.Jen has been asked by DJ to sit on his board as
a "voice" traditional *fore him..<pain!!> As such the
full story comes out..
DJ had a spat with his Mom he had her fill of abuse
from him, the crux is that Divorce was key to DJ and
his struggles..
His Mom kicked DJ out.. to his Dad's place.
Dad works days and has two cars.. Dj drives but
isn't insured.. On a free day DJ and a friend decide
to go snowboard at the Mountian.. they speed along,
go too fast and are stoped and issued a ticket for
$200-300 but released..
DJ worries about telling his Dad that night and his
"buddy" says that if he can get the money.. he can pay
off the ticket, and his Dad don't need to know anything..
At the snowboard park.. DJ see's that there is a sale of
new boards outside the shop, sticking in the snowbank..
He waits till the shop keeper turns away, then yanks all
he can carry out and heads for his Dads car..
The Security officer in the lot see's the entire thing
and confronts DJ with the goods in his arms! At the same
time the shop keeper comes out and see's DJ...
*Later-
DJ calls Scoutmaster Hutton..
Painfully Scoutmaster hears a weeping DJ tell him how foolish
he has been, that his young life is a total failure except for
Scouts... and now he has lost the Eagle. DJ's Mom don't want
anything to do with him and his Dad is red hot!
Scoutmaster tells DJ that he himself is very disappointed..
and councils him that he must face up to this and tell the
total complete truth.. He also tells him that BSA scouting
policies have had simular moral decisions to make, and yes..
His Eagle is totaly up to DJ and the decision of the board
with zero time to re-pent or re-group... He told DJ however,
that he beleves Scouting may be the *most fair of any treatment
DJ may encounter inlife so the outcome is out of Scoutmasters hands.
*If in fact, the board somehow, unlikely grants mercy.. and
awards DJ the Eagle, *DJ is now out of the troop, and not to
return ever to a meeting or event.
Scoutmaster is angry!
There will NOT be a 'court of honor, reguardless the outcome.
*The Eagle Board is tonight 8pm PST
Pray that Cdr.Jen can minister peace, somehow to this
broken and wounded family and to a boy-man in DJ!
