Things are different all over the place. The Rocky Mountain District Staff has done away with the district pinewood derby due to reasons they do not want to encounter again.
If we tried to do away with it in our section, we would be hunted down and strung up. It is open to Missionettes, Challengers, dads, etc. There is one particular dad from our church that participates both in our outpost race, and in the section race year after year, and loves it. The older boys and parents all love it, and don't consider it in any way, shape, or form, to be a "kiddie" activity. Yet, nonetheless, Commander Mark is going to be hosting a pinewood derby lock-in where they expect to complete 100+ cars and pix from the event would be a boon to others attempting similar things. Our outpost hosts a workday where kids and parents can have access to tools they may not necessarily have, and can come away with an almost complete car. The section event is also another time where we can schedule it in a way that we can use it, through concessions, as a fund raising event. And we all know that funds are often hard to come by.
