*I've seen this "devotion" done in church and... I object to the Leadership "ethic" displayed.

Bogus thinking.. When Life hands us a lemon.. we can hurl it back as a missle, or we can make Lemonaide. We may choose in the hour of our misery, to rise up and show some spine! We *MAY be valued in our worth to others, but "others" often can withold LOVE and RESPECT as wepons to control and manipulate the outcome *THEY desire.. Example- Commander Dad wants his boy to earn the GMA.. Commander Dad sacrifices and works to build the Outpost that will award his son the award. Along the way, the son "get's" that Cdr.Dad wants the GMA more than he does. *If the son says so.. the Cdr.Dad will feel snubed. It's likely a rift may form over the issue of the "worth" of the GMA. Therefore a GMA is "WORTH" more when awarded to someone who desired it than to the one who had it "thrown" at him... In the worst case.. Cdr.Dad know he "gundecked the award" and it builds disrespect for the son by the father. Wierd huh..
