There's special place in the Sierra called Yosemite valley.. Bar none.. anyone would call the view spectacular.
Yet for one artist, he struggled to express what he saw in the rocks and clifs and space of the Yosemite valley. Others took snap shots.. Ansel Adams studied the landscape. In a time when Photography was not respected as a valid art form, Ansel Adams was driven to be in the mountians and among the high places. We think we see what is before us by looking straight on. Ansel Adams began to think that perhaps the texture, and not the content shaped the impact of the view. Then he played with the light to express his ideas.. and finely he put a red filter over the black and white 8x10 glass plate view camera and shot one picture from the top of half-dome. *Got it! A Red filter blocks portions of the color spectrum but allows others thru to effect the "ortho-chromatic" properties of the film. *Suddenly he knew what to shoot and what to do.. Through the total process of creative artistry, he selected the subject and the conditions as a part of the experiance of seeing what could not be seen by others..<G> In the darkroom he manipulated the exsposure to shade and burn in in the print, worked free from constraints to develop an print that showed some new insight that was so very easily overlooked. Ansel Adams allways was short on cash and long on dreams.
