Hi all on Rangernet. I just went out this morning and got a GPS hand held from Bass Pro Shop. I hooked it up to my topo USA on my laptop and it gave me in real life movements on my laptop screen. I had my loving wife who thinks I am a bit nerdish... to drive me around ozark while I poked and played around with this Laptop GPS Software configuration. It was pretty cool drivng around a area I didn't know what was where and being able to announce exactly what was up a head to the second. Elevation and direction and speed. I even took her to the highest place in ozark... and we enjoyed dinner there. HA!
Really this technology is outstanding. I also works like a compass and does elevations as well as topo map download/uploads(I haven't done this yet) The hand held unit has display so you can use it by itself but the laptop...it gives you every detail you could amagine. When you turn it turns...etc. My laptop didn't have a serial port. I purchased a USB to serial port adapter and it all works great. Anyone have any good tips to point me to about these things?
