I had a paper route for awhile, but my first "real job" came when I was 13.

Worked as a farm laborer in the dusty fields of the Central Valley in Los Banos, Ca.
Hoed the weeds out of cotton and tomatoes and when the tomatoes got ripe, we crawled along the rows of tomato plants, pulled wooden lugs behind us as we plucked orange to red tomatoes. We had to carry the filled lugs to the end of the row, grab an empty lug, return to where we left off and resume picking. It was hot, dirty, smelly, hard work. I learned to appreciate sitting in an air conditioned office using my brain instead of my back...
