A "Bar" is the term that describes the bottom of a river or bay entrence to the larger ocean. The energy of the great waves and tidal effects causes sand and debri to shift and fill in building "sand bars" Oceans send waves as energy thousands of miles.. and when the bottom of that large circular wave touches a solid bottom or rock.. it "Lifts" and the water is displaced to form a standing wave. Waves come in "sets" simular to echo's in a cave.. The power sometimes falls off and is captured by the following wave to build a double or "freek" wave.. When you paddle out on a surfboard, you face this by "Duck Diveing" under the wave to pop out the backside where something like a flat spot is formed as the energy passes.. *If you are in a 32foot charter boat.. you power around in circles looking for a "hole" or the timeing between waves to "run the bar.." *Once.. out on the great Pacific Ocean, as you go out, the bottom falls away and the energy of the waves still passes under you.. but these waves do not build like the "breakers" in the surf.. There is a frequency to ocean waves.. A measured distance between.. and size of standing height as related to the depth of the lowest point. All that is expected... What apparently the Taki-Too found was a wave that turned the boat sideways while a "freek" wave came up suddenly to flip the Charter boat. Fishing in Oregon is great sport... Fishing off the "Bar" is an adventure<G> *But there is a reason the streach of coast is called the "Graveyard" of the Pacific. It has to do with the surviveability of being thrown out into cold water with un-seen currents.. In other parts of the world, 100 to 200 yards of swimming is not far. In the Northwest.. anything deeper than your knees can sweep you away, hold you down and rob you of the will to survive. *It's NOT REQUIRED for you to wear a "Life Jacket" Many times crossing the "Bar" is no problem, even in a sea kayak. The Skipper of the Taki Too had done it thousands of times and knew what he was doing... He died.. The facts are this: The days was Fathers day, and the boat was full of sons and dads on a short adventure. The wave hit and washed everyone outside on deck over into the Ocean. The boat rolled several times and came bottom side up.. for some time the boat floated and in the overturned cabin people calmly found life jackets and called out names.. Everyone who wore a life jacket lived... All who did not died... two are still missing today. The weather was great.. This was a paying Comercial Charter boat and the skipper gave everyone a lecture on safety. The other boats to the side of Taki Too survived fine... that day.. Many of them watched the tragidy with no life jacket on. God holds our lives in the palm of his hand, and provided a savior to build a path to keep us there. In life you not know what you might face in an instant, or you might misjudge the risk you take. *You just do not know the future.. Be ready for anything. -=A=- ===== *High MORALE is the Index of effective Leadership. --------------********+********-------------------- Morale raises belief of the Leader in the follower, of the follower in the Leader, of each in themself, and both in the .....cause! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
