Noel,
I don't believe it is really worth it to go the route of getting a lawyer
after your employer. I have been dealing with a lot of lawyers over the
past 8 months, and from what I have learned about them is that from what you
have mentioned below, you would not have a case. My very first raise was
.06 cents an hour, an amount I had thought to be laughable considering the
personal dangers and public safety issues I was involved with at the time.
I was a Security Officer, I had many duties of a Police Officer, though I
could not make arrests. I had to take people to court, get warrants, serve
notices, tow cars, write reports, and do lots of things for a wimpy $6.00 an
hour. I can understand and even relate to you about how disappointed you are
about what is happening at your job. My present company was a great company
until 9-11-01 hit and then it essentially flushed itself. Nobody has gotten
raises, the company has been unable to hire and retain quality employees,
they welched on their bills and left the employees holding a lot of medical
bills, they were Indian giving on their benefits and the situation was not a
very good one at all.
To your employer, you are dispensable. He can fire you at will whenever
he wants for whatever reason unless you can prove that beyond a shadow of a
doubt, that he treated you inequitably, maybe then and only then, you may
have a case for a lawyer. Discussing lawyers and raises in the same sentence
could get you fired. If you need to discuss a raise, you should sit down
with your next in line supervisor/manager and discuss the matter. Be polite
and diplomatic, negotiable and discuss what you would need to do to be
worthy of him giving you a raise, set your goal work toward it and you may
well get it, but if you go to him 1/2 cocked and confrontational, he will
likely fire you or give you at least a disciplinary report in your employee
file. That's not worth it. Most lawyers right now would tell you that you
don't have a case or enough of a case to support it even being heard in a
court. For what it is worth right now you would not be able to support
paying the lawyer's retention fees, the filing of paperwork and court costs
etc; it would just be more of a headache for you than you would presently
want to deal with right now, because a Judge would likely non-suit it or
just dismiss it if it could get to his bench. .
Just thought that I would share this with you because I thought it could be
of help. The best thing to help bring about a change like this in your
situation right now Noel is to take it to the Lord and pray about it, and
when the Lord sees that He will bless you as he sees fit. But this change
starts at the Cross with you and the Lord. Just an important fact to not
loose sight of.

Be Blessed!

Iron Mike
