Sounds like a meteor Geno. They do that around here too and usually in a big way. I know because I'm outside driving in the wee hours of the morning, I see these things quite often. The colors you see are escaping gasses and phosphorus that ignites as it enters the atmosphere. I didn't see this particular event, but I have seen many like it. There was this one time a Russian satellite entered the atmosphere and streaked itself across the East Coast, I saw it all happen in my rear view mirror. It's a very interesting thing to observe and perhaps you could make a teachable moment out of it for your boys.

Subject: [RR] God's fireworks

Last Thursday about 5:30 P.M. PST, Northern Cal (specifically in the Bay Area) received a rarity- a fireball form the skys. It looked like a flare coming down but bigger and faster. I saw it as red first then bright white and yellow ball. Some people said they saw greenish colors. I heard they saw it as far as Sacramento and down to Fresno, about a 3 hour driving radius as fast as you car can drive. I also heard reports from L.A. too. So I'm curious if anybody else around the country saw this also?
