Sounds like a meteor Geno. They do that around here
too and usually in a big way. I know because I'm outside driving in the wee
hours of the morning, I see these things quite often. The colors you see are
escaping gasses and phosphorus that ignites as it enters the atmosphere. I
didn't see this particular event, but I have seen many like it. There was this
one time a Russian satellite entered the atmosphere and streaked itself across
the East Coast, I saw it all happen in my rear view mirror. It's a very
interesting thing to observe and perhaps you could make a teachable moment out
of it for your boys.
