If they are nice to each other they will probably become friends, but if
they are not nice to each other then they will likely not become friends.
Yes we can be their friends as Ranger leaders, we need to be their friend
and advocate, but they should know where the line is. As leaders they should
be respecting those in authority but by respecting those in authority, they
should also be respecting their friends and not walking all over them. The
Cmdr is going to be cool if he can establish a relatabilty with the kids.
The CMDR isn't going to do well if he has a "Steve Urkel" type persona
and wears glasses taped in the middle or wears high water pants with white
socks and looks like somebody who spends way too much time working on a
computer. I think it's important that the kids know where the parameters are
but it can be done effectively and with love without compromising the
position of being the CMDR. The CMDR is a guide, he's not a parent, not a
cop and doesn't have the authority to make command decisions regarding the
kids without consultation of his upline chain of command being the Lord,
Pastor and parents. The CMDR is blessed with the opportunity to work with
that child for the short two hours a week that he may get, but mostly, I
have found that any ordering of the kids will usually come with the parent's
encouragement and with the authority allowed for as such as on a camping
trip.

Just my take,

Iron Mike
