We love to use email. It is much faster and less expensive than paper mail. Like paper mail, anyone with a lack of moral restraint can write any return address on any message, thus making a letter appear like it came from someone you know and trust, when in fact it came from a malicious third party. Unlike paper mail, it costs next to nothing to do so. In the last few weeks, there has been a virtual flood of email claiming to have originated from the eBible.org domain. Some of these messages have my own return address, and some have bogus addresses like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". Other emails falsely claim to be from your own ISP and may offer to help you remove a virus by running the attached program (which actually installs a virus). Two recently-released viruses have increased this activity. These viruses contain attachments that are really programs that install the virus. Once you open them, they install themselves, scan your address book, and use the addresses they find both for "To:" and "From:" addresses. They then mass-mail copies of themselves out to all of your email contacts. Some such viruses also hijack your computer to send junk mail, steal private information, or damage your files. You need to know that we don't normally send out any kind of executable attachment. We do send out pictures (normally in .jpg format) and newsletters (normally in .pdf format). Beware of any other kind of attachment, unless you are expecting an attachment from us and know in advance what it is. I strongly recommend using a good antivirus program and keeping its virus definitions up to date. McAfee and Symantec Anti-virus programs are both good, and there are others. At least one person to whom I'm sending this message has a virus-infected computer. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (MingW32) Comment: http://eBible.org/mpj/gpg.htm iD8DBQFARnlXRI/gxxfXR7sRAkZjAJoCXLK0JGozy1houlDOyg+zjnVCMACdHxRP aiDrZ+N94aGxRHeqnXv7z44= =z3Iv -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______ List host: http://eBible.org/mpj/ List info: http://eBible.org/rangernet/faq.htm To unsubscribe, send "unsubscribe rangernet" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://eBible.org/subscribe.htm
